Because I felt like creating one.
What just sticks with you?
Published on June 6, 2009 By Kitkun In PC Gaming

Over the years, some games just stick out from the crowd. Not because of a great story or innovative gameplay, but just because they have this certain style that nothing else does.  My question is this: Which games would you pick?

My choices:

The Legend of Zelda series: Dueling Skeletons, traveling underwater temples, or fighting from horseback, these games never cease to feel like an epic journey.

Okami: Unique art, gameplay, music and more, this game is one of the very few I was sad to finish simply because I wanted to keep going.

The first two Command and Conquer games: Oh, come on. These games have more style in their installation than most games in their entirety. From the FMV and CG cutscenes, to the in-game art, voices, and varied units, to the awesome soundtrack, everything just fits in these games. To a lesser extant, the next three also had great style.

Daggerfall, Syndicate, Herizogzewi, Master(s)? of Magic (gonna have to play this again in run up to Elm), Fantasy Wars, Fallout 1-2, The Witcher, could go on I suppose.

There's really so many. What's common about them is that extremely few of them come from the current era of gaming revolution. Before gaming went "corporate". Nostalgia or fact, it felt like it was a closed social club with games for gamers by other gamers.

I agree with the Zelda sentiment, even though I never played the later installments of the series. Pre-Red Alert 2 Command & Conquer games, before they seemed to become a competition between Escher and Dali on who could imagine the most flipped-out military unit.

Fallout 1/2/Tactics and the entire Baldur's Gate saga even though I consider BG2 a slump. The entire line of Elder Scrolls, except Oblivion. Duke Nukem 3D (omg, you can move the aim up and down and jump?!). The original Syndicate. Deus Ex.

And an very-often-forgotten Outcast. Man, that game never got the attention it deserved. I guess it just didn't lend itself to a cult following, but it was and is brilliant. Planescape: Torment, for it's absolutely thrilling storytelling and setting.

I'm going to say Fall from Heaven 2 aswell. It could be that I have just fallen in love with it. It's not been long enough to claim to be objective in any way or fashion, but I'll give it an honorable mention.

There are countless others, but this is just from the top of my head.

Metroid Prime : this game was just perfect. Impressives boss, good story, still amazing graphics and such an atmosphere.

Rogue squadron II : rogue leader : destroying a star destroyer in a big dog fight with a lot of tie fighters is priceless.

Rise of Nations : best RTS game ever

FF IX : my first RPG. Great intricated story that makes yourself involved.

Crusader: No Remorse: You look like a red Boba Fett or something. Total. Badass.

Deus Ex: Probably the best game I've ever played? I replay it once every couple of years. (Also TNM kicks ass!)

Fallout 1&2: Still the only game where you can pickpocket anyone and place timed explosives on them that I know of

Blizzard games made before WC3 and WoW.

eg.

Lost Vikings, Diablo 1&2, Warcraft 1&2, Starcraft

Going back further I really enjoyed Hyperspeed (sequel to lightspeed) and Master of Orion II.

I definately agree on the first command and conquer games. OOZING style! How cool did the chopper thingies look! (Orcas?) And obelisks of light!

Shadow of the Colossus on PS2.  Wow! You almost can't believe a PS2 is running it and it oozes style from every pore. Huge open environments. It could be basiclly described as a game with about 12 boss battles. I avoid games with boss battles like the plague because I hate them but SotC is way different. Each Colossus is enormus and to kill it you have to find a way to climb onto it and crawl over it's body to hit it's tatooed weak spots. Getting onto and crawling over the colossus is a puzzle. You have to find the right path to each weakness. The control is nothing short of amazing. You never feel like you lost because of the controls EVER. Great style my little post doesn't do it justice. Music, graphics, and design. It really needs to be seen and played not described. If you have a PS2, buy it!

- Anything made by Square pre-N64
- Metal Slug series
- Last Blade / Last Blade II
- Street Fighter III [cmon, it was gorgeous]
- fl0wer
- Daggerfall
- Warcraft II [on kali FTW]
- Half-Life
- Myth: The Fallen Lords [pre-Bungie corporate buy out!]
- Metroid, I prefer Super, on the SNES, but the Prime series also has its own unique art style

Certainly doesn't cover all of them, just a nice selection of some I can think of off the top of my head.
